Join your fellow Yalies on Thursday, June 18, at 4pm for an exciting virtual event --- a webinar with the two petition candidates seeking to be on the ballot for next year's election to select an Alumni Trustee to serve on the Yale Corporation.
The webinar will be moderated by Alan Horton and Mike Hanson. After the presentation, there will be time for Q&A. Please email your questions in advance or during the webinar to Trey Farmer at treyfarmer@gmail.com or use the Q&A function in the Zoom Webinar. We will take as many questions as time allows. The webinar will last for approximately one hour.
Even as the coronavirus challenges the University’s status quo, the Yale Corporation — a body steeped in tradition — will conduct next year's Alumni Trustee (Fellow) election as planned. However, two outsider candidates are challenging the secrecy and lack of transparency in the election process.
Annually, Yale conducts an election to select an Alumni Trustee to serve on the board of the Yale Corporation. Alumni vote for one of between two and five candidates who are chosen by a Yale-appointed nominating committee. Six Alumni Trustees serve staggered six-year terms.
To secure a place on the ballot, petition candidates must declare their candidacy 14 months in advance of the election, and secure a minimum of 4,000 valid alumni supporting signatures by an October deadline.
As part of his campaign as a possible petition candidate for the 2021 election, former Knoxville, Tennessee Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe ’67 emphasizes the need for greater transparency — regarding both Corporation elections and meetings.
Maggie Thomas FES ’15 — also a potential petition candidate for 2021 and former climate policy advisor to Sen. Elizabeth Warren — also expresses a desire for more transparency in the Corporation, though the bedrock of her campaign is climate-conscious investing. In an interview with the News, Thomas noted Yale’s bylaws state that Corporation minutes must remain sealed until 50 years after each meeting, and that Yale and its board must be brought “a bit more into the 21st century.”
